NC Department of Transportation awards second contract for Complete 540 project

The NC Department of Transportation has issued its second of three contracts for the $2.2 billion Complete 540 project in Wake County.

The department awarded the $160 million contract to Colorado’s Flatiron and Virginia’s Branch Civil, who are tackling the project as a joint venture.

The firm will construct Complete 540 from east of Pierce Olive Road to east of U.S. 401 (Fayetteville Road) in Wake County. The stretch of 540 will be 60 lanes, with a speed limit of 70 miles per hour.

The NCDOT expects construction to start late this year, and the completed highway to open in 2023.
