Temporary Staffing Agencies Could Save Your Career - Spec On The Job

When the job market took a hit years ago many people who lost their jobs moved to part-time work. Or even jobs that were below their education level and experience. Sadly, many people are still trying to get back into their careers. Males in particular are having a hard time. However, a recent study is showing that temporary staffing agencies can help.

Dangers of Part-time Work

David Pedulla, a sociologist and researcher at the University of Texas at Austin’s Population Center is finding that part-time work is “incredibly negative.” His study shows:

  • Employers respond to part-time job applicants 50 percent less than candidates working full-time.
  • The response rate for men with part-time jobs is even less than 50 percent.
  • Surprisingly, part-time work has no negative effect on how often employers respond to women’s job applications.

Studies Show Part-time Work Hurts Men

Pedulla ran another study in which he entered 2,420 made up applications for 1,210 real job openings in five cities across the U.S. He tracked the responses from employers for each one. The only differences among the resumes were gender and a period of joblessness. To find out why part-time work hurts an applicant’s jop prospects he asked 903 hiring managers. Here’s what they said:

  • Employers said they viewed men working below their skill set as less capable and less committed. As opposed to applicants who were never part-time.
  • Strangely, managers saw women in the same situation as their male counterparts as less capable, but not less committed.

Temporary Staffing Agencies are the Solution

The type of experience nearly all employers accepted in Pedulla’s study as equal to a full-time job was a history of temporary work. This goes for both men and women. So the next time the job market goes south, consider signing with a temporary staffing agency. Temporary work could be the key to maintaining a successful career.
