In recent years, as the economy improves and more jobs need to be filled, higher percentages of workers are failing pre-employment drug screens. Here at Spec, if a candidate/worker fails a pre-employment drug screen they cannot work for us for 5 years. Passing and failing drug screens is make or break with our company.
When candidates come in looking for a job, we can drug screen then with either a 5-panel:
or 10-panel:
swab and have them working right away. For a more comprehensive screening candidates are sent to a drug screening facility. However, some candidates refuse a drug screen and simply turn around and leave. As well, with marijuana becoming legal in many states, it is becoming more socially acceptable. Regardless, our drug screening policy remains the same because of the potential safety hazard.
It is not only marijuana, but cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin positive results have been increasing in recent years. Unfortunately, workers who abuse alcohol or drugs are 3.5 times more likely to be involved in a workplace accident. Also, they are 5 times more likely to file a workers’ compensation claim, 10 times more likely to miss work, and 33% less productive. Much worse, drugs are responsible for 40% of all industrial fatalities.
Attention to safety is important in any job but most important in construction, distribution, and transportation. The potential for accidents increases on construction sites and when operating a motor vehicle. Making these jobs as safe as possible starts with drug free workers. Pre-screening helps with workplace safety, decrease worker compensation costs, and lowers the potential for illegal activity to occur on the job. The costs of pre-employment drug screenings can range from $10-$50. This cost is much less than paying for a workers compensation claim.
Spec Personnel combats the increasing amount of failed drug screens by performing the screening right then and there when the candidate comes in. It only takes about 2-3 minutes to get the results. This also helps us get workers out on the job quickly! If the candidate refuses a drug screen, it will be notated in their file to prevent any attempts to cheat the screen. As well, we maintain the right to perform randomized drug screening son our current and working employees.
We are dedicated to sending out the best workers and increasing drug screen failures will not get in the way!
