Background Screening: Employment

August 11 2016

Employers relied on background screening more than ever in 2016. Human resources representatives who are hiring temporary or contract labor have started using background screening to vet their candidates. This process has both advantages and disadvantages for candidates. The important implications of this increase in background checks among employers are described in this article.

Some Statistics

Although not all employers screen their candidates an increasing number have begun to use background screening as an integral part of their hiring process. Five years ago only 48% of surveyed employers said that they used background checks, in 2016 81% say that they do. This means that in the past five years the number of companies which use background checks to filter out candidates has nearly doubled. More emphasis is being placed on the hiring process, 53% of surveyed employers said that hiring and training employees was their biggest business challenge. This increased interest in the hiring, training, and development of talent could be the reason behind the number of employers who now use background checks.

Effects of Background Screening

This kind of screening can cause various effects within a company. Often times temporary employees who are screened before being hired have a higher opinion of their employer, and usually take their work more seriously. This is because screening legitimizes the job making it seem as though it carries more importance. 81% of surveyed employers said that their screening process uncovered lies and inconsistencies on the resumes of candidates. Screens can also reward those candidates who have honest resumes and clear histories. By performing checks like this employers can ensure that the candidates they choose are honest people. This usually improves efficiency and safety on the job.

Purpose of Background Screening

74% of companies that perform background screens as part of their pre-employment process do so because they want to improve the quality of hires.  Furthermore, enhancing safety and security, increasing employee retention, improving compliance, and improving company reputation are all purposes of the pre-employment background screening.
