According to building permit data, home construction rose by 1.8% in April 2019 versus the previous month.
However, that rate is actually 2.5% lower than the rate one year ago. This suggests that there are currently not enough new homes to meet demand.
Construction rates were up in the Northeast and the Midwest due to the end of winter weather. But construction fell 5.7% in the South and 5.5% in the West.
