Number of truck drivers reaches all-time high, but driver shortage persists

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of truckers is at an all-time high.
The number rebounded to 3.5 million in 2017 after sinking to fewer than 3 million during the Great Recession.
However, even though the number of drivers continues to rise there are still not enough to keep up with demand.
The American Trucking Association estimates that the industry is still short by at least 50,000 drivers.
